At Essential 6, we’re all about helping you stay safe and prepared. Here are some quick tips to avoid burns while cooking:

  • Stay Focused: Never leave frying pans unattended on the stove.
  • Flip with Care: Use the right tools to flip your pancakes – no risky manoeuvres!
  • Keep Kids Safe: Ensure little ones stay at a safe distance from hot surfaces.

What to Do If You Get Burned:

Accidents can happen, even with the best precautions. Here’s what you can do:

  1. Cool the Burn: Run the affected area under cool (not cold) water for at least 20 minutes. Immediate cooling is best, but it is still beneficial even 3 hours after the burn.
  2. Remove loose clothing and jewellery: Before the area starts to swell  remove clothing and jewellery. Do not remove if they are stuck to the burn
  3. Cover It Up: Use a clean, non-stick dressing to protect the burn, cling film is ideal if you can discard of the first two turns of the film and lay it on the burn, do not wrap it around or apply to the face.
  4. Seek Help: If the burn is severe or covers a large area, seek medical attention immediately.

Never:

  • Use ice to cool the burn
  • Burst blisters
  • Touch the burn
  • Apply ointments, creams or fats
  • Apply adhesive dressings
  • Rely on a burns dressing to cool the burn!
