Course Overview

Our Tier 2 Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training is designed for health and social care professionals who directly support autistic people or individuals with a learning disability.

This one-day, in-person programme builds on the mandatory e‑learning module and delivers enhanced, role-specific capabilities aligned with the NHS Core Capabilities Framework.

Co-delivered by nurses with 30 years’ autism experience and Experts by Experience, our training blends clinical excellence with powerful lived-experience insights.

Course Aims

  • Equip participants with advanced capability to provide safe, person-centred care for autistic individuals and those with learning disabilities.

  • Embed best practice in legal compliance, communication, and reasonable adjustments, meeting all Tier 2 standards

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Prevent diagnostic overshadowing and identify frequently co‑occurring conditions

  2. Apply relevant legislation—Mental Capacity Act, Human Rights Act, Autism Act, Equality Act—in care planning.

  3. Deliver reasonable adjustments, including hospital passports and accessible communication strategies.

  4. Recognise and challenge professional and cultural biases to shape inclusive care cultures.

  5. Use Ask-Listen-Do for effective feedback and continuous service improvement.

  6. Integrate learning, STOMP/STAMP, and annual health checks—all critical to safe, evidence-based practice.
