It’s National Apprenticeship Week and it will be running from 7th – 13th February 2022.

As with all great companies it’s a good time to promote your Health, Safety and Environment culture to your apprentices as every apprentice should feel safe and happy within their employment.

Here are 5 simple tips to help you promote Health, Safety and Wellbeing across your organisation;

  • Toolbox talks – these are an excellent way to raise awareness before work commences. You can raise the apprentices knowledge about relevant hazards and provide advice in a safe environment before any work commences. The apprentices can also ask questions and will feel supported by their supervisor.

  • Formal Training – A wide range of courses such as First Aid Training, Fire Safety Training, Health & Safety Training, and specific courses will all be valuable to keep the apprentice safe and free from harm. It will also be a legal requirement to train them in Health & Safety subjects relevant to their job.

  • Risk Assessment – These will need to be in place and you will need to communicate the findings to your apprentices. All risk assessments should be suitable and sufficient to the tasks involved with their employment.

  • Communication – For a shy young person who maybe straight from school the workplace and the people within can be a scary place. Good supervisors and managers are required to be supportive by encouraging open and honest communication at all times. An apprentice who is supported in this way will much more likely have the confidence to report health and safety concerns or even provide suitable solutions to the problem.

  • Ensure the work is manageable and within psychological capability – This sounds complicated but it doesn’t have to be. It could be as straightforward as making sure a young person understands what is expected of them, checking they understand and are able to remember and follow instructions. It is important that young people are given the necessary training and supervision so not to put them at risk.
